10 Senior Care Secrets

Most people who we meet through our business are going through this process for the first time. After all, most families will typically only have to deal with senior care a maximum of 4 times in their lives… and for most families, it ends up being less than that. Because of that, most of the time the single greatest fear that the family has is that they will make the wrong decision, and that their wrong decision will cause their loved one pain and suffering, discomfort, etc.

Perhaps the above describes you. Or, maybe you aren’t there yet. Maybe you are in a position where you know that Mom or Dad, or someone else will need some help soon, but you have no clue where to start, and you also are worried that you will choose an option in the future that may not be the best one… so you’re starting to research your options early in order to best educate yourself when the time comes.

Either way, this post will no doubt help you at least get started in the right direction….

So without further delay, here are the Top 10 Secrets of the Senior Care Industry!

  • If you are paying rent to one company, and writing a second check to a different company for the care services, your loved one is almost surely living in a facility that is unlicensed by the State.
  • Nursing homes are typically not a good fit for someone with dementia.
  • Almost every single contract includes a clause that allows the facility to raise the price at anytime if they decide that more help is needed.
  • Independent Living facilities can NOT provide true 24 hour, safe, adequate care services in a monthly contract approach. The only way they are able to do this is to implement 24 hour home care services which will cost more than $10,000.00 per month, every month.
  • In many facilities, the job of the sales person is to fill the bed, period. That may mean moving your loved one in at one price, and knowing that based on their needs, that price will go UP SIGNIFICANTLY within 30 days. This is wrong, and completely unethical.
  • Well run, well managed small homes can be a fantastic option for someone who requires a great deal of care, and has a low budget.
  • Home health care agencies can often provide physical therapy, a visiting nurse, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and more once someone leaves a nursing home or hospital. These services are very beneficial to the long-term health of your loved one. But some doctors will not order them.
  • Some facilities treat and pay their staff so poorly that they are unable to create any sort of staff stability. Many start their employees at MINIMUM WAGE. Even worse than that, many offer no real training program.
  • Unlicensed facilities sometimes provide better care than licensed. Some licensed facilities have received terrifying reports of neglect, and are still open.
  • “Placement agencies” are paid by facilities. Their services may be free to you, but they are getting paid a substantial amount (often as high as $4,000 or more) for referring you to their facility. What’s more alarming is that they will never recommend a facility who they do not have a contract with, even if that facility is the best option for your loved one.
