How is Assisted Living Paid For?

One of the most common questions that we get is the question regarding how assisted living services are usually paid for. There are several ways to answer this question and as usual, we want to make sure our answers that we provide are always thorough.

The majority of assisted living is paid for from private funds of the resident or their family members. This may be from a combination of the residents pension, social security, retirement accounts and savings, or directly from family members. For those who do not have the ability to pay for assisted living services from private funds, there are sometimes options for Medicaid to subsidize the cost of care and to pay the facility directly for that persons care. This however requires that the person qualify for these funds to be allocated to them, and it also requires that the facility accepts/is contracted to accept funds from Medicaid for those services. Medicare does not currently have an option that pays for assisted living or in-home care services, so this is unfortunately not an option. Lastly, some people do have insurance plans (called long-term care insurance) that will cover either in-home care services or assisted living services. Often these plans were included in an employment contract from someones career.
